Introduction

Department of General Surgery was incorporated in Government Medical College, Akola in 2002 as one of the final year subject with aim of providing quality education to undergraduate students.

The department provides basic training in General Surgery to undergraduates and also provides general surgical care for patients.

The patients coming to this institute are not only from Akola district but also from neighbouring districts like Amravati, Buldana, Washim & some part of Yavatmal. Since Government Medical College was established on existing District Hospital which was one of pioneer referral unit in this area since 1927, the department too inherits the faith of masses in patient care. This department is committed to ensure accessible, high quality and ethical care for all patients coming to this hospital.

So ultimate mission is to attain optimal physical, mental, and social health and well-being for all general surgical patients.
Vision
  1. As a teaching institute we like to train students both undergraduates and postgraduates who are competent, skillful, ethical, knowledgeable on whom a society can rely.
  2. It is utmost important to create confidence in society about the survival of their patient by giving quality and advanced care.
  3. As modern care becomes more and more sophisticated and advanced it also becomes beyond the reach of a common man so it's our vision to create more reliable Medical care system by providing a caring and supportive environment for patients, patient's families and subordinates. Its our vision to Provide services that are respectful, convenient, easily usable and culturally competent.
  4. In long run it necessitates to conduct assessments and evaluation programmes that routinely involve end user of services and in turn modify programmes appropriately to improve the quality of service.
Functions & objectives.
  1. A medical student after graduation may have different avenues of his/her professional career and may work either as a first contact physician in a private, semi private or public sector or may take up further specialization in surgery or other specialties.
  2. He may have to work in different settings such as rural, semi-urban or urban which may have deficient or compromised facilities.
  3. At the end of the teaching/training the undergraduate will be able to:
  4. a) Diagnose and manage common health problems of the individual and the community appropriate to his/her position as a member of the health team at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
  5. b) Be competent to practice curative, preventive, promotive and rehabilitative medicine and understand the concept of primary health care.
  6. c) Understand the importance and implementation of the National Health Programmes in the context of national priorities.
  7. d) Understand the socio-psychological, cultural, economic and environmental factors affecting health and develop human attitude required for professional responsibilities.
  8. e) Develop the ability for continued self-learning with a scientific attitude of mind.
